2023 Sailing Camp at HYC

CALLING ALL JUNIOR SAILORS AGES 6 TO 17!

The camp is a half-day class in the morning or afternoon. We will have beginner sessions, green fleet (learn to race) and advance racing sessions in both the Optimist and 420. If your child hasn’t had any sailing experience, they will need to start off in an Opti session or little skipper.

Class size is limited to create a one-on-one coaching experience to ensure that your child becomes confident. Instruction from beginner to advanced racing is taught in the Optimist and 420.

Generally, children 6 through 13 are in Opti’s and older, experienced students are in 420’s. Exceptions may be considered based on size, age and skill at the instructor’s discretion. Children must be 6 years old by August 31 to participate.

All Camp participants MUST pass a swim test.

In the event of cancellation prior to the start of a session, fees will be refunded less a $50 administrative charge 8 weeks prior to the start of camp. In the event of cancellation less than 8 weeks and greater than 4 weeks a half refund will be given. There will be no refunds 4 weeks prior to the start of the session. LITTLE SKIPPERS CAMP (AGES 6-7)

We are pleased to offer a program for children 6-7 years of age. This program will introduce the sport of sailing to our younger sailors. The curriculum will focus on water safety and will teach basic sailing skills using age appropriate activities. Children must  know how to swim and are required to wear lifejackets at all times.

Designed as a small group, introductory, hands-on class, the focus is on making kids comfortable in and around the water and boats. Our goal is to build life-long sailors by helping kids become more comfortable in the water and providing them with a fun and welcoming introduction to sailing. Each camp day starts with the three rules: Have Fun, Wear a Lifejacket, and Listen to the Coach. With just three rules, things are kept simple and safe.

Campers will learn general water safety rules, basic sailing knots and marine education. The children will become familiar with understanding wind direction, boat parts, points of sail, steering and how everything works together to control a sailboat. This will be taught through on-the-water instruction as well as sailing related arts, crafts and games. Activities are designed to build confidence to sail in Optimist sailboats. During the first session each student will be given a very basic swim check while wearing a life jacket in order to assess their comfort level in the water.
